THE WALL STREET JOURNAL AND THE HERITAGE FOUNDATION’S 2012 INDEX OF ECONOMIC FREEDOM IN PANAMA

April, 11 2012

A review of the 2012 Index of Economic Freedom has ranked Panama as the 55th freest in economic freedom with a score of 65.2, slightly better than last year by 0.3 points with improvements in freedom from corruption, monetary and fiscal freedom. Panama also ranked 11th out of 29 countries in the Central America/Caribbean and South America region with an overall score better than the world and regional averages.

Panama’s government, among other positive efforts, has taken steps to implement reforms to improve the business environment and legal transparency, and has also reduced the maximum income tax and corporate tax rates to 25 percent. As Panama is a service-oriented country, it continues to be an excellent international business center for logistics, tourism, financial services, maritime operations and air transportation, among others.
