Canada and Panama Set to Sign Free trade Agreement
May, 16 2010
On May 14, Panamanian Minister of Commerce and Industry, Roberto Henríquez, will travel to Canada to sign the free trade agreement both nations agreed to during the Torrijos administration.
The agreement covers market access for goods, cross-border trade in services, telecommunications, investment, financial services and government procurement. In 2008, bilateral merchandise trade between Canada and Panama totaled $149.1 million, with Canadian exports accounting for $127.9 million and imports totaling $21.2 million. In 2008, Canadian merchandise exports to Panama grew by 48% since 2007.
It is possible that Panama will be invited to participate in the upcoming meetings of the G8 and the G20 by invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, whose nation is hosting the meetings of industrial powers in June.
